Your First Visit

What Happens During Your First Visit?

We Listen

We start by understanding you.

You’ll have time to explain:

  • what you’re experiencing
  • how it began
  • what makes it better or worse
  • previous injuries or treatment
  • your goals.

We believe good assessment starts with careful listening.

We Take a Detailed History

Problems rarely exists in isolation.

Understanding your health history helps us recognise patterns that may be contributing to your current problem.

We Assess How You Move

We’ll assess posture, spinal movement and how different parts of your body are functioning together.

Often this provides valuable clues that scans alone cannot show.

Clinical Examination

Where appropriate this may include:

  • orthopaedic tests
  • neurological examination
  • muscle strength
  • flexibility
  • coordination

The exact examination depends on your individual problem.

Hands-on Assessment

We’ll carefully examine the joints, muscles and soft tissues involved.

This helps us understand how different parts of your body are working together.

Putting the Pieces Together

Rather than focusing on one affected spot, we look at the overall pattern.

This helps us identify the factors most likely contributing to your symptoms.

Explaining What We Find

You’ll receive a clear explanation in everyday language.

We’ll explain:

  • what we think is happening
  • why it may have developed
  • what factors may be contributing
  • what you can do about it.

You should leave with a much better understanding of your problem.

Understanding Your Problem Comes First

Whether your problem started yesterday or has been bothering you for years, your first visit is designed to understand what’s happening, explain what we find, and help you decide what to do next.

Our goal is to provide you with enough information to make an informed decision that’s right for you.

You Are In Good Hands

It’s completely normal to feel uncertain before seeing someone new.

Many of our patients tell us they were wondering things like:

  • Will they actually listen?
  • Will I need an X-ray?
  • Will it hurt?
  • Am I going to be told I need to come forever?
  • What if chiropractic isn’t appropriate for me?
  • Will I understand what’s wrong?

These are all reasonable questions.

Our aim is to answer them clearly and honestly.

Will I Receive Treatment At My First Visit?

We understand that if we can help, you’ll want to get started.

If chiropractic care appears appropriate and there is enough time, treatment can sometimes begin during your first appointment.

However, particularly with a new, persistent or complicated problem, the inital visit is often dedicated entirely to your assessment.

In some instances, we may decide that it’s better to investigate further before beginning treatment.

This might include:

  • imaging
  • further assessment
  • referral to another healthcare provider

If we don’t think treatment is appropriate, we’ll explain why and help you understand what we recommend instead.

The priority of your first visit is not simply to provide treatment. It’s to understand your problem and determine the most appropriate next step.

Our Philosophy

Helping You Understand Your Spine

One of the most valuable parts of your visit isn’t simply treatment.

It’s understanding.

Many people have lived with recurring pain for years without ever receiving a clear explanation of why it keeps returning.

We believe understanding your condition helps you:

  • make better decisions
  • feel more confident
  • participate actively in your recovery
  • know what to expect moving forward.

Our role is not simply to provide treatment.

It’s to help you understand what’s happening and what your options are.

Your Options Moving Forward

Once we’ve completed your assessment and explained our findings, we’ll discuss the options available to you.

Depending on your situation, these may include:

Chiropractic Care

If we believe you’re likely to benefit, we’ll explain what we recommend and why.

Exercises & Self-Care

Many patients receive personalised advice to help improve movement, strength or confidence between visits.

Monitoring

Sometimes the best option is to monitor how your condition responds before deciding on further care.

Referral

If your problem would be better managed elsewhere, we’ll explain this and help guide you towards the most appropriate healthcare provider.

The decision is always yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will treatment hurt?

Most patients find chiropractic care comfortable. Some techniques involve gentle movements, while others are more specific. We’ll explain everything before we begin and adapt our approach to suit you.

Do I need X-rays?

Not routinely.

If imaging is likely to change how we assess or manage your condition, we’ll discuss why it’s recommended.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing is ideal, although it’s usually not essential.

Depending on the area being assessed, you may be asked to remove a jacket or outer layer.

How long does the appointment take?

Your first visit generally takes around 30 minutes, allowing time for a thorough assessment, examination and discussion.

Will I have to keep coming?

No.

We’ll explain our recommendations, including the reasons behind them, but the choice about whether to continue care is always yours.

There is never any obligation to book ongoing appointments.

Can I bring someone with me?

Absolutely.

You’re welcome to bring your partner, family member or friend if it helps you feel more comfortable.
