Chiropractic for adults in Adelaide
If you have back or neck pain, sciatica, headaches, muscle or joint concern book with Dr Richard Mathers. In full-time practice since 1999, and holding three university degrees, he provides a thorough assessment, high level expertise and honest recommendations. He combines hands-on treatment with simple ways to help yourself at home and at work, so you benefit in the clinic and between visits.
Long periods of sitting or incomplete recovery from injuries can cause pain or weakness to build up in the spine over time, so muscles tighten and start to guard. Some adults want fast relief; others aim to build steadier comfort and function over time.
If you prefer lower-force options without audible adjustments, please let us know so we can accommodate your wishes, and plan accordingly. When helpful, self-care or in-house remedial massage can complement your chiropractic care.
How we help adults
Time is precious. Our first focus is your immediate needs, often pain to solve or wanting to feel “normal” again. We start with a thorough assessment, honest recommendations, hands-on chiropractic, and practical tools you can use between visits, no pressure, no guilt, just support.
If you choose to build beyond relief, we will discuss what is likely possible and what it may require. As things settle, visit spacing usually widens; progress can also feel easier when paired with self-care or in-house remedial massage.
Many adults prefer periodic check-ins to help maintain what they have achieved, like seeing a dentist to monitor and support your dental health. With a bit of time, knowledge and care, you can do a lot to look after your own spine day to day at home, at work or at school.

What our adult chiropractic includes
Assessment and explanation
We start with your goals, history and how your days run, carefully assess the health of your spine and nervous system, then explain what we noticed and build a plan that fits with you.
- You outline your priorities, problems or concerns
- We check key spine structures like discs, muscles, ligaments and nerves
- We explain what we find and the steps we suggest
Manual techniques and mobilisation
Options may include diversified adjustments, joint mobilisation and small-amplitude thrusts, matched to your presentation and preferences. An audible pop can occur (gas releasing inside the joint); if you prefer to avoid this, we can provide lower-force alternatives and explain the reason for each step.
- We explain each step before we begin
- Choice and questions are welcome at any time
- Short visits when appropriate
Table-assisted methods with drop piece
A drop-piece table allows controlled, low-force changes at specific joints when suitable.
- Targeted movement while you stay relaxed
- We describe what you might feel
- You can pause at any time
Low-force options on request
If you prefer approaches without audible adjustments, we’ll plan for that from the outset.
- Gentle pacing and positioning
- Clear reasons for each step
- Progress reviews to confirm comfort and progress
Movement and home strategies
Many adults ask whether improvement is possible when most of the day is spent sitting. We focus on the movements that matter, incorporate short micro-breaks, and implement practical workstation adjustments.
Prefer to avoid audible adjustments? Lower-force options are available; just let us know. Do you feel you are time poor. Home advice steps are brief and realistic. Wondering about the number of visits? We’ll set goals and review them together, then adjust based on progress.
Simple strategies we may suggest including short, repeatable movements you can do at home or work. We prescribe exercises just for you based on your exam findings. In addition we can give tailored advice for your particular work environment. For example, workstation setup, keyboard and mouse position, choosing the right chair and how best to use it. Driving posture and seat-support tweaks for extended periods of driving, advice on pillows, mattresses and sleep-position.

Relief, stability and maintaining gains
Relief
Our first priority is your immediate needs, often a pain or problem to solve, or wanting to feel “normal” again. We start with a thorough assessment, hands-on chiropractic, honest recommendations and tools you can use to continue your gains between visits, no pressure, no guilt, just support.
Stability
Hands-on chiropractic alone is often enough to reach your goals. If you choose, progress can be enhanced with self-care or in-house remedial massage. If you’d like to keep building spine/frame health beyond relief, we’ll explore what’s likely possible and what it may require; appointment spacing typically widens and the timeframe extends to reach your chosen level.
Maintaining gains
Many of our patients choose some form of ongoing input to help maintain what they’ve achieved; the same way brushing your teeth at home, and seeing a Dentist, can help maintain dental health. Maintenance care focuses on keeping your spine fit and moving well, helping to reduce the chance of flare-ups, and supporting your long-term health goals. The decision is always yours—we’ll explain the benefits, answer your questions, and support whichever path you feel is right. Our philosophy: with a bit of time, knowledge and care, Australians can do much themselves to proactively care for their spines.
What to expect from your chiropractor consultation
From your first contact, your concerns are heard. We take the time to listen, ask the right questions, and run checks that help us learn more about your spine needs, and how we may be able to help. We are interested in specific details like occupational history, past injuries or traumas, family similarities. Care is matched to you and what you hope to change, with clear explanations at a pace that feels comfortable.
The clinic is welcoming and friendly, featuring state-of-the-art equipment and offering the option of low-force methods. During visits, your practitioner is present and focused, taking time to do the work properly and treating you with the same care we would offer our family.

Will chiropractic help me?
After hearing your goals, your Chiropractor will carefully assess you and provide an honest impression of whether chiropractic care is likely to benefit you. They will also give you an idea of how long it is likely to take, and how much progress you are likely to achieve.
Each case is treated as unique, and if your chiropractor is unsure or unable to assist, they will not hesitate to arrange further investigations or refer. See also ‘conditions helped’ list below.
Will the Chiropractor 'crack' or 'pop' my spine?
There are numerous ways to deliver spine treatment, many of which do not involve joint ‘popping’ or ‘cracking’. Our Chiropractor has an extensive skill set so if there is a type of treatment that you wish to avoid, or a kind that you are really looking for, simply let him know.
Regardless of the care you choose, your Chiropractor will explain everything as he goes and only proceed once you are completely comfortable.
If I start chiropractic care, will I need to keep coming?
Any ongoing care will depend on various factors, including your specific condition, your response to treatment, and your specific health goals.
In some cases, chiropractic care may provide immediate relief or resolve the issue after a few sessions, and no further treatment may be necessary. However, for some conditions, ongoing maintenance visits might be recommended to manage symptoms and prevent recurrence.
