“Your core is weak.”

It’s one of the most common explanations people hear after developing low back pain.

Naturally, many people assume that if they just strengthen their abdominal muscles, their back pain will disappear — and never return.

If only it were that simple.

The truth is that strong abdominal muscles are certainly helpful, but they’re only one small part of what makes a back healthy and resilient.

Imagine Two People…

One person has visible “six-pack” muscles, goes to the gym five days a week, and can hold a plank for several minutes.

The other enjoys walking, gardening and playing with the grandchildren but has never done a formal core workout.

Who is less likely to develop back pain?

Surprisingly, it could be either one.

Back pain affects elite athletes, manual labourers, office workers, runners, gym enthusiasts and people who have never stepped inside a fitness centre.

That tells us something important:

Back pain isn’t usually caused by weak abdominal muscles alone.

Your Core Is Part of the Team

Your abdominal muscles are important.

They help stabilise your trunk, transfer forces between your upper and lower body, and assist during lifting, bending and carrying.

Just like stronger leg muscles make climbing stairs easier, stronger abdominal muscles can make many daily activities feel easier too.

But your spine relies on much more than your abs.

Healthy backs depend on the teamwork of:

healthy discs and ligaments

the small deep layer muscles that provide segmental control

your brain’s capacity to constantly monitor, control and protect

contribution from pelvis, hips and legs

When one area struggles, the others often compensate.

Strength Isn’t the Same as Capacity

Perhaps the better question isn’t:

“How strong is my core?”

Instead, ask:

“How well can my body cope with everything I ask it to do?”

Can it comfortably tolerate a long day at work?

Can it cope with gardening all weekend?

Can it handle lifting the grandchildren, carrying shopping, or sitting through a long flight?

The more physical capacity your body has, the larger your “buffer” becomes before everyday activities start causing problems.

That’s Why Assessment Matters

Two people can have identical back pain but need completely different advice.

One may benefit from improving strength.

Another may need better movement.

Someone else may simply need to work on their posture.

That’s why a thorough assessment is far more valuable than assuming everyone simply needs more sit-ups or planks.

The Take-Home Message

Strong abdominal muscles are a good thing.

They contribute to a healthier spine and can certainly be part of preventing future back problems.

But they are not a magic shield against back pain.

The healthiest backs usually belong to people who keep moving, maintain good overall fitness, know their body and address problems before they become longstanding.

Rather than chasing the perfect “core workout,” focus on building a body that is strong, adaptable and capable of meeting the demands of everyday life.

Your back will usually thank you for it.
